Oklahoma electrician license: levels, hours, reciprocity, pay
Oklahoma electrician license rules as of 2026: 8,000 hours for Unlimited, 4,000 for Residential, reciprocity, the temp card, CE, and what BLS says it pays.
An Oklahoma Unlimited Electrical Journeyman license takes 8,000 verifiable hours as a registered apprentice, at least 4,000 of them commercial or industrial, plus a PSI exam. A Residential Journeyman takes 4,000 hours. Journeymen licensed a year or more in a reciprocal state can skip the test. The median Oklahoma electrician made $29.33 an hour in May 2025, per BLS.
Everything below is as of 2026, from the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB). Rules change, so confirm with CIB before you file anything. For the rest of the country, see electrician license requirements in every state.

02Which licenses does Oklahoma issue?
Oklahoma licenses electricians statewide through CIB. The journeyman page lists Unlimited, Residential and Refinery Electrical Journeyman licenses. CIB also licenses Unlimited and Limited Electrical Contractors and registers apprentices.
Mike Holt Enterprises, an exam-prep company that tracks every board, says a journeyman "must be licensed and employed by a licensed contractor." It also says the Unlimited Contractor takes 12,000 hours, including 4,000 as a licensed Unlimited journeyman, and that the contractor has to be an owner or officer of the company. That's secondhand, so confirm with CIB.
03How do you qualify for the journeyman exam?
You log verifiable hours as a registered apprentice under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman or contractor.
- Unlimited: 8,000 hours, with at least 4,000 in commercial or industrial work. Up to 2,000 can come from formal electrical education.
- Residential: 4,000 hours. Up to 1,000 can come from formal education.
School hours have to be actual classroom hours backed by a transcript. If most of your hours are houses, count your commercial hours before you apply for the Unlimited. Say you've got 8,000 hours and 3,000 are commercial. You qualify for the Residential card now and you're 1,000 commercial hours short of the Unlimited.
Apprentices renew every year
Apprentices reregister every year. Since January 1, 2026, you owe 3 hours of CE before each reregistration, unless you're a student apprentice or enrolled in and attending an approved course.
04What's the Oklahoma exam like?
Once CIB approves your application, it gives you the contact for a third-party testing vendor, and you set the date, time and place. Under HB 3215, the passing grade dropped from 75% to 70% on November 1, 2024, and you can retest 30 days after a fail instead of 90. CIB moved its electrical exams to the 2023 NEC on December 14, 2024, after the state adopted the 2023 code effective September 14, 2024. Mike Holt Enterprises lists the journeyman exam at 100 questions and 240 minutes. CIB's 2026 building code update moved plumbing, mechanical and gas exams to new codes in fall 2026, but electrical exams weren't on that list. Check the testing page before you book.
05Which states reciprocate with Oklahoma?
CIB's reciprocity guidelines list states including Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. The rules are short:
- Your license can't be a "grandfathered license."
- You've held it at least one year.
- Your application includes a full work history.
CIB also says not to call to check on your application. They'll write you when it's reviewed.
Two-way only sometimes
The lists don't always match. New Mexico's Electrical Bureau accepts Oklahoma journeyman cards for its EE-98J, but Oklahoma's list doesn't include New Mexico. Go with CIB's list. If you're coming from New Mexico, plan on testing.
Arkansas is on Oklahoma's list. Kansas isn't. Our electrician license reciprocity guide explains how these agreements work state to state.
06What is an Oklahoma temporary journeyman license?
It's a disaster card, not a travel card. Under 59 O.S. § 1685.1, as laid out on CIB's temporary journeyman application, CIB issues it only within a year after the Governor declares a state of emergency over a disaster that destroyed homes.
- You need a current journeyman license from a state that tests for it.
- Within 10 days of starting work, you apply for the Oklahoma exam ($25), then take it at the first chance offered.
- The form lists a $25 application fee, a $50 license fee and a $92 PSI testing fee.
- It's nonrenewable and expires one year after the emergency declaration.
So if a contractor brings you in for a plant shutdown or a data center job, this isn't your way in. Reciprocity or the exam is.
07CE and renewal
Starting January 1, 2026, journeymen and contractors owe 12 hours of CE in the 36 months before the license expires, double the old amount. Six hours cover the codes adopted by the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission. The other six can cover wiring methods, grounding and bonding, NFPA 70E and other approved electrical topics. Code update courses end in "E" on CIB's course list, other courses in "EO" and apprentice courses in "EA."
Mike Holt Enterprises reports licenses renew every year and expire the last day of your birth month. Confirm with CIB.
08What does an Oklahoma electrician make?
The median Oklahoma electrician made $29.33 an hour in May 2025, a little under the $30.38 national median. These are BLS OEWS straight-time wages for all electricians, apprentices included. They leave out overtime, per diem and benefits, and they're market data, not what any one contractor will pay you.
| Area (BLS OEWS, May 2025) | Median hourly | 10th to 90th pct |
|---|---|---|
| Oklahoma | $29.33 | $18.22 to $44.59 |
| United States | $30.38 | $20.50 to $52.17 |
Oklahoma had 8,500 electricians on payroll and a $61,010 median annual wage. Same survey, the medians in nearby states were $31.66 in Kansas, $31.45 in Missouri, $28.07 in New Mexico and $23.59 in Arkansas. The top 10% in Oklahoma made $44.59 or more.
Most of those hands are open shop. The Independent Electrical Contractors' 2026 economic impact study puts Oklahoma's merit shop share of the electrical workforce at 95%. A gap of more than $26 an hour between the 10th and 90th percentile means where you land depends on the work you can run. Our journeyman electrician pay breakdown covers what moves a rate.

How many hours do I need for an Oklahoma journeyman license?
8,000 for the Unlimited, with at least 4,000 commercial or industrial, and 4,000 for the Residential. School can cover up to 2,000 and 1,000 hours.
Does New Mexico reciprocity work both ways with Oklahoma?
No. New Mexico accepts Oklahoma journeyman licenses, but Oklahoma's reciprocity list doesn't include New Mexico. A New Mexico hand moving to Oklahoma should plan to take the exam.

Only after a declared state of emergency involving destroyed homes. The temporary card is nonrenewable, expires a year after the declaration, and you have to apply for the exam within 10 days of starting work.
How much CE do Oklahoma electricians need?
Journeymen and contractors need 12 hours every 3 years, 6 on adopted codes. Apprentices need 3 hours every year unless they're in an approved course.
