A data center check is a journeyman rate for that market with long hours and per diem stacked on top. Fortune reported IBEW Local 26 journeymen in the D.C. and northern Virginia area make about $59.50 an hour (March 2026), and an Indeed analysis found hourly pay for data center installation workers 42% above other installation listings. The $240,000 to $280,000 stories are 7-day weeks with overtime, not a normal year.

Here's how the check is built, with the math laid out so you can run your own.

01The base rate

The base rate on a data center job is set by the market and the contractor, the same as any commercial job. What's different is how much money gets stacked on top of it. Dated rates from published sources:

SourceRateDate
IBEW Local 26, D.C. and northern Virginia (reported by Fortune)About $59.50 an hour, journeymanMarch 2026
IBEW Local 48, Portland area, commercial and industrial$65.50 an hour gross2026
IBEW Local 46, Seattle area, inside journey level$77.93 an hourEffective Aug. 3, 2026
BLS, all electricians, national median$30.38 an hourMay 2025

These are inside journeyman rates, not a data center premium. The union rates are wage only. Each local adds benefits on top that don't show on the check; Local 48 lists $33.24 an hour in employer fringes, and how to read a union wage sheet breaks those down. The BLS number is straight time for all electricians, apprentices included, and isn't data center specific. Use it as a floor, not a target.

On the ad side, an Indeed analysis reported by Virginia Business in August 2026 found the median hourly pay for installation workers at data centers was 42% higher than other installation and maintenance listings. That's all installation work, not just electricians. The same analysis found annual pay only 12% higher. So don't multiply the 42% by a full year. The hourly premium and the yearly premium aren't the same thing.

02What hours add

Hours add more to a data center check than the rate does. Overtime under federal law is time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek (DOL Fact Sheet #23).

Say you make $45 an hour. Here's one week:

ScheduleStraight hoursOT hours at $67.50Weekly wages
5-8s400$1,800
6-10s4020$3,150
7-12s4044$4,770

On 7-12s, more than half your wages are overtime ($2,970 of $4,770). That's also why a schedule cut hurts: going from 7-12s to 5-10s at $45 drops your week from $4,770 to $2,475. What 6-10s really pay has the OT rules, including the states with daily overtime.

03What per diem adds

Per diem can add hundreds of dollars a week for hands who travel, and when it's paid right it isn't taxed. A few yardsticks:

  • The federal standard rate is $181 a day for fiscal 2027 ($113 lodging, $68 meals), per the GSA FY 2027 per diem highlights. In fiscal 2026 it was $178.
  • In some data center counties it's higher. GSA's FY 2027 rates file has Loudoun County, Virginia at $201 a day and Franklin County (Columbus), Ohio at $218.
  • A contractor's per diem is its own number. GSA is what the federal government pays its travelers, not what a contractor owes you.

At $125 a day, 7 days is $875 a week. On days worked only, 6 days is $750. Same daily number, $125 a week apart. Ask for the unit.

Per diem is tax-free only under an accountable plan, at or under the federal rate, while you're away from your tax home on a job expected to last a year or less (IRS Publication 463). Electrician per diem explained covers the rules.

04A year, stacked up

Here's the same $45 hand, four ways, with $125 a day per diem on the travel rows. Every number is an example.

SetupWages a weekPer diem a weekWeeksYear
Local, 5-8s$1,800$050$90,000
Data center, 6-10s, local$3,150$040$126,000
Data center, 6-10s, travel$3,150$87540$161,000
Data center, 7-12s, travel$4,770$87540$225,800

The math on the last row: $4,770 plus $875 is $5,645 a week, times 40 weeks is $225,800. That's 3,360 hours of work (84 x 40), against 2,000 hours on the local row.

Per hour worked, the gap shrinks. The local row is $45.00 an hour. The 7-12s travel row is $67.20 an hour counting per diem ($225,800 divided by 3,360), and you pay your own room and food out of the per diem.

05How the $240,000 headlines get built

The big numbers come from 7-day weeks with premium pay. National coverage in 2026 told of young electricians on data center jobs making "$240,000 to $280,000 a year, far above the industry norm," and said "overtime pay and bonuses can push earnings far above the standard" (Entrepreneur, Aug. 3, 2026). The story didn't break the number down. Here's one way a check like that adds up, using a real union sheet.

Take the IBEW Local 46 inside wage sheet for the Seattle area ($77.93 journey level, effective Aug. 3, 2026). Its overtime rule pays the first 2 hours past 8 on weekdays and the first 8 on Saturday at time and a half; all other overtime, and all of Sunday, is double (Local 46 wage sheet).

One 7-12s week under that sheet:

  1. Monday to Friday, 12 hours a day: 8 straight, 2 at time and a half, 2 at double.
  2. Saturday, 12 hours: 8 at time and a half, 4 at double.
  3. Sunday, 12 hours: all double.
  4. Totals: 40 straight, 18 at time and a half, 26 at double.
  5. Pay: $3,117.20 + $2,104.11 + $4,052.36 = $9,273.67 for the week.

Twenty-six weeks of that is $241,115. That's half a year of 84-hour weeks with no per diem counted. It happens. It isn't what most data center hands make, and no job owes it to you. Fortune put the Local 26 base at "more than $120,000 a year" and said overtime or a foreman's role can push it closer to $200,000.

06What the big check costs you

The money is real, and so are the costs. Run these before you compare:

  • Hours. 84-hour weeks for months. The money is mostly OT, and OT is the first thing cut when the schedule eases.
  • Weeks. Data center crews peak before energization and shrink after turnover. A $5,645 week times 20 weeks is $112,900, not $225,800.
  • The road. Room, food and trips home come out of per diem. In a high-cost county, they can eat most of it. Travel vs local work: the whole-check math shows how to count them.
  • The gap. Time between phases or jobs with no check.

The other side of the ledger: data center work is pushing pay up everywhere. In the AGC and NCCER 2026 workforce survey, 49% of firms that did data center work said it increased wage pressure. One national electrical contractor told us they've "been going higher and higher on the pay rate" to compete. Your current shop may be feeling the same thing, which matters if you'd rather stay home.

If you're deciding between a data center and the local work you have, data center vs local commercial lines them up side by side.

FAQFAQs

Do data center electricians make $200,000 a year?

Some do, mostly on long weeks with overtime and per diem, or in high-rate union markets with double time. Fortune put a northern Virginia union journeyman at more than $120,000 a year on the base rate and closer to $200,000 with overtime or a foreman's role. Most hands won't see that every year.

What do data center electricians make an hour?

It depends on the market and whether the job is union. Union inside journeyman wages in the 2026 sources above run from about $59.50 an hour (Local 26, reported by Fortune) to $77.93 (Local 46, Seattle area). Indeed found data center installation listings paying 42% more per hour than other installation and maintenance listings.

Do data center jobs pay per diem?

Some do, mostly for hands who travel. The amount and the rules are set by the contractor. Ask for the dollar amount, whether it's per day or per week, and whether it's paid 7 days or days worked. The federal standard rate for fiscal 2027 is $181 a day.

Is data center work worth it for the money?

Only if the hours and weeks hold. At $45 an hour, 7-12s with $125 a day per diem comes to $5,645 a week, but a 20-week job is $112,900 for the year unless you line up the next one. Count the road costs and the gap between jobs.

Do data center electricians get paid more than other commercial electricians?

Per hour, often yes. Indeed found the median hourly pay for data center installation workers 42% above other installation and maintenance listings. Per year, the gap was smaller, 12%, so weeks worked matter as much as the rate.
