A Utah journeyman electrician license takes 8,000 hours plus a 4-year apprenticeship program with 576 classroom hours, or 16,000 hours of experience, then a written and a practical exam. Journeymen licensed in a state Utah rates as equivalent can get the card by endorsement after holding theirs a year. The median Utah electrician made $29.81 an hour in May 2025, per BLS.

Everything below is as of 2026, from the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), Electrical in the Utah Department of Commerce. Rules change, so confirm with DOPL before you apply. For how Utah stacks up against the rest of the country, start with electrician license requirements by state.

02Do apprentices need a license in Utah?

Yes. Utah licenses apprentices, and your hours only count once you hold the apprentice license. DOPL's own endorsement map spells out the journeyman standard as full-time experience "as a licensed apprentice," and the journeyman page says the hours have to be under a licensed journeyman or master.

Coming from a state that doesn't license apprentices? Keep pay stubs, W-2s and a letter from each shop listing your hours and the work.

03Two ways to the journeyman card

DOPL gives two paths, and both end at the same two exams.

  1. Apprenticeship path. Finish a 4-year electrical apprenticeship program with 576 classroom hours, plus 8,000 hours of licensed experience under a journeyman or master.
  2. Experience-only path. Log 16,000 hours under a licensed journeyman or master. DOPL's map calls this 8 years of full-time work as a licensed apprentice outside a training program.

One catch: DOPL's exam information page lists 6,000 hours for the school path, while the journeyman application page says 8,000. Ask DOPL which number it will hold you to before you register.

Run the math on path 2 before you pick it. At 2,080 hours a year, 16,000 hours is about 7.7 years. The school path's 8,000 hours is about 3.8 years. School cuts the field time roughly in half.

Utah also issues a residential journeyman license: a 2-year program (288 classroom hours) plus 3,000 hours of residential work, or 8,000 residential hours, then a 4-module practical. If you want commercial and industrial work, go for the full journeyman card.

04How the Utah exams work

Utah tests through Prov, and there are two pieces.

  • Written (theory) exam. DOPL's FAQ says you can take it "remotely from home or any location in the U.S." Pick the UT jurisdiction when you register.
  • Practical exam. Six modules, in person, at an approved Utah Prov testing center. Plan a trip if you live out of state.

One change this year: since January 19, 2026, every first-time candidate registering with Prov has to attach the Verification of Electrician Experience form, per a notice on DOPL's electrical page. Out-of-state trade school grads also attach official transcripts. DOPL's FAQ adds that you can't test early: "state law requires on-the-job work hours and school hours/grades be met" first.

Study tips are in our journeyman electrician exam guide.

05Can you get a Utah license by endorsement?

Yes, if DOPL rates your state's license as equivalent and you've held it at least a year. DOPL publishes an endorsement map for each license type. The journeyman map says you "must have held the license type indicated on the map for at least one year," active and in good standing, plus an official license verification sent from your home board.

What to know before you count on it:

  • The maps are dated. The journeyman map says "Last updated: 7/1/2020." Call DOPL to confirm your state's status before you book a move.
  • No equivalent state? You can still send your license and hours to cover part of Utah's requirements, then fill the gaps.
  • Red Seal counts, one kind. DOPL's FAQ says a Canadian Construction Electrician Red Seal "is considered equivalent" to the Utah journeyman license after you've held it a year. An Industrial Electrician Red Seal is not.
  • It's not two-way. Utah endorses under its own statute (Utah Code 58-1-302). That doesn't mean your old state will take a Utah card back. Check the board where you're headed, every time.

Utah isn't a NERA member. NERA and South Dakota's commission list it as a state with similar requirements. So moves to and from Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming run on each board's own rules. Our Colorado electrician license guide, Idaho electrician license guide and Wyoming electrician license guide cover what those boards want. The bigger picture is in our electrician license reciprocity guide.

06What it takes to make master

DOPL's master license has three paths:

  1. 8,000 hours as a licensed journeyman.
  2. An EAC/ABET electrical engineering degree plus 2,000 hours as a licensed apprentice.
  3. An associate of applied science from an electrical trade school plus 4,000 hours as a licensed journeyman.

Everyone passes the Utah Master Electrician Law and Rule exam, even out-of-state masters on endorsement. The practical is waived if you passed it as a journeyman.

07CE, renewal and the code

Utah electrical licenses renew by November 30 of even-numbered years, with 16 hours of approved CE. DOPL's renewal page says 12 must be core: 8 on the NEC and 4 on NFPA 70E. The other 4 can be core or professional.

If you hold a Utah card now, your next deadline is November 30, 2026. DOPL emails a notice 90 days out, and working on an expired license is a criminal offense under Utah law. Per Mike Holt Enterprises' state page, Utah has been on the 2023 NEC since July 1, 2025; confirm with DOPL before you buy a code book.

08What does a Utah electrician make?

The median Utah electrician made $29.81 an hour in May 2025, with the top 10% at $42.84 or more. These are BLS OEWS straight-time wages for all electricians, apprentices included. They leave out overtime, per diem and benefits, and they're market data, not what any one contractor will pay you.

Area (BLS OEWS, May 2025)Median hourly10th to 90th pct
Utah$29.81$19.20 to $42.84
Salt Lake City-Murray$30.11$20.81 to $42.61
Ogden$29.82$19.11 to $41.66
Provo-Orem-Lehi$29.26$18.28 to $42.46
Logan, UT-ID$27.92$18.39 to $39.89
St. George$27.17$17.99 to $38.52

Utah had 11,450 electricians on payroll, 5,710 of them in the Salt Lake City metro. The state median sits a little under the national median of $30.38.

Next door, the same survey has Wyoming at $36.59, Nevada at $35.37, Idaho at $30.29 and Colorado at $29.92. Those are state medians, not job offers, but a hand coming in from Wyoming or Nevada should look hard at the whole check.

On the road in Salt Lake, the GSA FY2027 rate is $152 a night for lodging and $80 a day for meals and incidentals, the yardstick most per diem offers get measured against. Our electrician per diem guide covers how to read an offer, and the journeyman electrician pay guide covers what moves a rate inside these ranges.

FAQFAQs

Can I work in Utah on my out-of-state journeyman license?

Not until DOPL issues you a Utah license. If your state is green on DOPL's journeyman endorsement map and you've held the card a year, you apply by endorsement with a verification from your home board. If not, you document your hours and test.

Can I take the Utah journeyman exam online?

The written theory exam, yes. DOPL says you can take it remotely from anywhere in the U.S. The six-module practical has to be taken in person at an approved Utah Prov center.

Do apprentice hours from another state count in Utah?

They can help, but Utah's standard is experience as a licensed apprentice. If your state didn't license apprentices, expect DOPL to look at your records and possibly ask for more. Call DOPL before you count on them.

Does a Red Seal work in Utah?

A Construction Electrician Red Seal held at least a year counts as equivalent to the Utah journeyman license. An Industrial Electrician Red Seal does not.

How many CE hours does a Utah electrician need?

16 hours each 2-year licensing period, due by November 30 of even years. At least 12 are core, including 8 on the NEC and 4 on NFPA 70E.
